Windjammers hope experience, depth pay off on diamond
Rockport — The following is a synopsis of the 2013 Camden Hills Regional High School baseball team
Coach/years coached current team: Jeff Hart, fifth year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 9-7. eighth in Eastern Class B. The Windjammers defeated No. 9 Nokomis 9-6 in the preliminary round, upset No. 1 Presque Isle 6-3 in the quarterfinals and were downed by No. 3 Foxcroft Academy of Dover-Foxcroft 6-0 in the semifinals.
Roster: Seniors Eliot Grindle (outfield, pitcher), Coleman Powers (outfield), Alex Crans (catcher), Caleb McFarland (outfield, pitcher), Ian Nason (infield) and Connor Hart (infield); juniors Sam Berry (infield, pitcher), Aubrey Pennington (infield, outfield, pitcher), John Hall (infield), Connor Graffam (infield, pitcher), Chandler Crans (pitcher, infield), Henry Laurita (outfield) and Joe Chamberlain (outfield); and sophomores Ben Rollins (infield, pitcher), Teddy Laurita (infield, pitcher) and Andrew Hall (pitcher, infield).
Outlook: While the Windjammers graduated four top-notch starters last season in Adam Carlsen, Kyle Olehnik, Taylor Hall and Andrew Flanagan, the team still maintains a strong nucleus of returning players and figures to be in the thick of things in Eastern Class B this season.
"We have experience at every position and depth at every position," said coach Hart. "But we lost some key players. We have to prove ourselves with the next group ready to step in."
Hart said he anticipates Waterville to be the cream of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B crop this season, as the Purple Panthers have been the past few years.
"Our expectations are to improve every day and see where that takes us," said Hart. "Hopefully, it will get us into a postseason situation and we are playing our best at that time."
