Windjammers face stiff competition at annual preseason tourneyCamden Hills bests Gorham, falls to Cape Elizabeth at MRC
Rockport — The 12th annual Allen Insurance and Financial High School Tennis Challenge went off without a hitch Friday, April 11 at Midcoast Recreation Center in Rockport, with two of last year's top teams — and perhaps three of this year's best teams — all took the court in preseason matches.
The preseason event originated in 2002 when former Camden Hills coach Chris Walker-Spencer and MRC's John Lippman, a former Windjammer tennis coach, and Steve Crane, the former CEO of the Allen Agency, wanted a way to bring a strong boys tennis presence to the Midcoast.
The Windjammers went 1-1 on the day as they bested defending Class A state champion Gorham 3-2, while falling to defending Class B state champion Cape Elizabeth 3-2.
The Capers also defeated the Rams 4-1 in a showdown between last year's state champs.
"Many thanks to the Allen Agency, tournament director John Lippman, the Midcoast Recreation Center, and the Gorham and Cape Elizabeth High School teams for coming to Rockport for a really fun and competitive day of tennis,” said Camden Hills coach Noah Capetta. “This was a great opportunity for us to see how we match up with 2 of the better teams around the state and what our strengths and weaknesses are going into the regular season.”
