What's Up, Pup (or is it Kitty)? An Interview with Hester and Artemis!

Hester

Artemis

Names: Hester and Artemis

Breed: Hester is a small dilute tortie: blueish-gray in color with specks of peach all over and a big patch of peach on her chest. We suspect that she might have been a runt, or malnourished as a kitten, because she's quite small and skinny. Artemis is a torbie (tortie tabby), and because of her fluffy ears, double paws, and large size, we're pretty sure she's at least part Maine Coon. They're both fluffy with long fur.

Ages: Hester is around four or five based on her teeth. Artemis is two.

Which Loyal Biscuit Co. location do you like to frequent: Rockland, where my best friend Ashley works. She's a rock star and she always helps us pick out the best toys, treats, and supplies for our girls.

How did you and your pets meet?: My husband Alex and I went to the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County thinking we'd look for a cat, maybe two if there was a bonded pair that needed us. We were pretty overwhelmed by the number of cats that needed homes. We ended up asking to see a cat that was in desperate need, and she showed us Hester, who was a stray when she was brought into the shelter six months before. While I was falling in love with her, beautiful Artemis had caught Alex's eye. We adopted them both that day. They had never socialized much, but they get on well now.

What are some of your pets’ favorite places to visit outside of the Loyal Biscuit Co. OR if they are typically a housebound animal, where is their favorite place to lounge in the house?: Our kitties are indoors only for now. Artemis likes to be wherever we are as long as she can have some space; when she wants to be alone, she sleeps in her cat condo, for which she is much too large. Hester likes her window seat underneath a big plant stand.

How did you decide on your pets’ names?: Alex named Artemis for no real reason; he just loves that name. She's the Greek goddess of the hunt, and her name makes sense when you see her attacking the laser pointer light. Hester is one of my favorite book characters of all time, an Arctic hare with a calm and reserved personality. Hester the cat's coloring and demeanor so well matched Hester the hare's that once I thought of it, I couldn't imagine a more perfect name for her.

What’s your pets’ favorite thing to eat?: Both cats are currently afraid of all treats, but they love their Natural Balance dry food. For wet food they'll eat anything; we've tried a lot and stick with Weruva and Dave's.

If your pets could spend one day as a human, what would they do?: I'm pretty sure they would find caves or alleyways to hide and sleep in. Hester might dart through traffic while Artemis watched and laughed at her. They would avoid loud noises and other people like the plague. I think they would make bizarre humans.

Do they have any pet peeves?: Hester was a stray for an unknown length of time, possibly since birth, so she really doesn't like any sudden movements or people walking near her. She's very warm and cuddly as long as you approach her carefully and give her lots of warning. Artemis hates her tail or butt being touched and will definitely let you know with claws and teeth if you're getting too close!

Do your pets have any hidden talents or know any special tricks?: With her massive paws, Artemis palms cat toys like an NBA player with a basketball. We're still getting to know our girls so they might surprise us with super secret powers at some point in the future!

If you were given $100 to spend on anything in the Loyal Biscuit Co., what would you buy?: Honestly, I'd stock up on the great food and maybe buy a few shiny new toys for the cats to destroy. And I'd get some more of the Tickle Gherkins that put Hester in a dreamy, twitchy trance.

Describe your pets’ perfect day: For my cats, the perfect day is to be left alone for most of it, play with the laser pointer and feather toy for an hour or two, and get lots of cuddles around bedtime. And food. Lots of food.
