Wet weather does not dampen Karen's 'Energy 4 Life' cancer run/walk
Roman, Hall top male, female finishers in fundraising event to fight cancer
Rockland — The first annual Karen's "Energy 4 Life" Cancer Run/Walk 5-kilometer event was held Sept. 29 at Snow Marine Park on Mechanic Street. The event, sponsored by Maritime Energy, went on despite dreary, rainy conditions.
There were more than 130 participants ready to walk or run the 3.1-mile course. The nearly $10,600 raised from the event will go to the "Energy 4 Life" program to help others in their fight against cancer. The program was started by Susan Ware Page's mother, Karen, and the Ware family.
Page, president of Maritime Energy, lost her mother Karen to colon cancer in 2010.
"We all have been affected in some way from this terrible disease and we want to do this run/walk to raise money, show support for the people who are fighting this horrible disease, and to also do this in memory of the ones near and dear to our hearts who we have lost," said Page.
In Saturday's 5K, Christopher Roman was the top overall finisher, with a time of 21:37. Kelly Hall was the first female finisher in 25:14.
The event was started by Susan Ware Page and Rebecca Ware McLaughlin, with the guidance of Russ Wolfertz, in memory of Susan's and Rebecca's mother.
Cool, breezy, and sometimes rainy weather did not stop runners/walkers and nearly 60 volunteers from working together to raise money to fight cancer Saturday morning. There were approximately 160 registrants between runners and walkers, nearly 30 event sponsors and donations made towards the cause.
The money raised will be donated to the Maine Cancer Foundation directed towards cancer research and Maritime Energy’s “Energy 4 Life” fund, which helps local people affected with the disease. All money will remain in Maine.
“The community involvement for Karen’s Walk in memory of my loving mother and to fight cancer has been so touching," said Susan. "The support from runners, walkers, sponsors, donors and volunteers has been incredible and I can’t thank people enough for their generosity. Our goal is to help fight cancer and to make a difference, so hopefully someday families don’t have to go through the heartbreak we have experienced."
The individual 5K race/walk results, with a person's place, name, age and time listed, were: 1, Roman, 39, 21:37; 2, Deandre Brisbane, 22, 23:54; 3, John Harrington, 22, 24:16; 4, K.
