‘Wally’ at River Arts West
Damariscotta — Three Nobleboro artists — including former longtime Waldoboro resident Wally Huber Schweighauser — will present a joint exhibition of their work at the River Arts West Gallery, Route 1. The public is invited to an opening reception Friday, June 20, from 5 to 7 p.m. during the Damariscotta/Newcastle Third Friday Art Walk.
The show features watercolor and pencil work by Schweighauser, an artist who, at nearly 102, is still creating art. Work by ceramic artist Tom Fontaine; and Wally’s daughter, Delly, also will be on exhibit. The show will continue through July 2.
Schweighauser has been an artist for most of her life. She has worked with all media, from clay to watercolors, wax resist acrylics and stained glass pieces. She was born in Basel, Switzerland, in 1912. She moved to Canada and started homesteading in 1935, while raising a family of four children along with her husband. In 1960, she moved with her family to Duxbury, Mass. While in Massachusetts, she attended the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and was a member of the Copley Society of Art. She has had numerous solo art exhibitions throughout Maine and Massachusetts.
Fontaine is a ceramic artist currently working in sculptural porcelain vessels. A potter for more than 40 years and graduate of California State University, Long Beach, working primarily with coil and slab-constructed clay vessels, he lived and worked in California, exhibiting his work throughout the West, before moving to Maine in 2001. He is selective about exhibiting his work, preferring to devote his time to exploring the forms and textures that please him as an artist.
River Arts is located at 241 Route 1, exhibits the work of more than 100 different artists monthly and has a full program of art classes, as well as concerts and other cultural events.
