Wallace crowned 2013 blueberry queen
Union — Just moments after donning the Miss Congeniality sash, Elise Murphy Wallace was crowned 2013 Maine Wild Blueberry Festival Queen during a ceremony at Union Fair Aug. 18.
Brittany Anthony of Thomaston was crowned princess.
Wallace, who hails from Friendship, graduated from Medomak Valley High School in 2013 and plans to attend University of Southern Maine in Gorham. She is the daughter of Pamela Wallace of Friendship and Mark Wallace of Waldoboro; is employed at Rock Harbor, Hannaford and Shelley's Flowers and Gifts.
Anthony graduated from Georges Valley High School in 2009 and currently attends University of Maine at Augusta. She is the daughter of David and Beth Anthony.
Outgoing 2012 Maine Wild Blueberry Festival Queen Abigail Royer said only one word could sum up her year as reigning blueberry queen: "thrilling." She noted she established a scholarship on behalf of herself and future blueberry queens to benefit a University of Maine student studying agriculture and noted she will miss "little girls who are excited to meet a 'real' princess." She encouraged the incoming queen to enjoy her time as a blueberry ambassador.
Wallace won the field of eight contestants, which also included Anthony, Hannah Babcock, Amanda Bernadini, Brighde Curtin, Ashley Lindsey, Katherine Newcombe and Amy Proulx. As queen, Wallace will be awarded a $1,750 cash award. The Crown Princess will receive a $750 cash award. Miss Congeniality will receive a $300 cash award. Cash awards are donated by the Union Fair, the Maine Blueberry Commission, and the Wild Blueberry Association of North America.
