The all-volunteer midcoast choral ensemble VoXX: Voice of Twenty announces its annual “Music for the New Year” concert series for 2017. The theme of the winter program, “O Great Mystery,” revolves around the Missa O Magnum Mysterium by Tomás Luis de Victoria (1592), which the group will sing in its entirety. Also featured will be unaccompanied works from the mid-fifteenth to the twenty-first century, chosen to explore the mysteries of the season and bring light to the turning of the year. A highlight will be the world premiere of Laudate Dominum, an uplifting SATB carol composed in 2015 by the group’s Music Director, John Mehrmann. In keeping with the group’s wide-ranging interest in fine unaccompanied choral music, other selections will range from sacred to secular to downright saucy by composers from Anonymous to J.S. Bach to Vaughan Williams.
VoXX will present five performances of “Music for the New Year”: Saturday, January 7, Belfast Free Library, 106 High St., 7 p.m., Sunday, January 8, Basilica of Saints Peter & Paul, 122 Ash St., Lewiston, 2 p.m., Friday, January 13, Union Hall, 24 Central St., Rockport, 7 p.m., Saturday, January 14, St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 11 Glidden St., Newcastle, 7 p.m., Sunday, January 22, Phippsburg Congregational Church, 10 Church Lane, 2 p.m.
