Island teams in middle of Western Class D playoff hunt

Searsport — It was an overall forgettable weekend, wins-wise, for the Vinalhaven/North Haven baseball and softball squads as the islanders traveled to Searsport for a Saturday, May 24 doubleheader showdown among fellow Vikings.

Searsport outscored Vinalhaven/North Haven 45-14 in the four games and made it a clean sweep against the the islanders.

All four teams are in the Western Class D playoff hunt with the postseason a few weeks away.

Baseball

Searsport 15, Vinalhaven/North Haven 5 (5 inns.)

At Searsport May 24, Searsport benefited from a 10-run fourth inning and made it a sweep on the day against the islanders. Searsport also plated four in the first and another in the second, while Vinalhaven/North Haven scored one in the first and third innings and three in the fourth.

Leading the hosts at the plate were Eric Phillips (single, 3 runs), Barrett Grant (single, RBI, 2 runs), Kyle Moore (2 singles, 4 RBIs, 2 runs), Jake Powell (double, single, run), Troy Reynolds (2 singles, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) and Mitchell Philbrook (single, RBI, 2 runs).

For Vinalhaven/North Haven, Avery Waterman (single, 2 runs), Kaleb Campbell (single, run), Cody Hamilton (single, run) and Adam Young (2 singles, run) paced the offense.

Powell, Philbrook and Barrett Grant pitched for Searsport. The names of the island pitchers were unavailable.

In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Western Class D, Vinalhaven/North Haven (2-6, 5.9524 points) is seventh, while Richmond (7-1, 44.0027 points) is first in the 10-team region. The top seven teams qualify for the playoffs.

Searsport 11, Vinalhaven/North Haven 1 (5 inns.)

At Searsport May 24, Searsport jumped on the islanders early and often, prevailing in game one of the day's doubleheader. Searsport scored six runs in the first inning, four in the second and one in the fourth, while Vinalhaven/North Haven scored one in the fifth.

Leading the hosts at the plate were Barrett Grant (2 singles, 2 runs), Kyle Moore (2 singles, 2 runs), Jake Powell (single, double, 3 RBIs, 2 runs), Troy Reynolds (single, run, 2 RBIs), Jay Burkard (single, 2 RBIs, 2 runs) and Mitchell Philbrook (single, RBI).

For the visitors, Noah Slivinsky rapped two singles and scored the team's lone run.

Reynolds and Moore pitched for Searsport. The names of the island pitchers were unavailable.

Softball

Searsport 12, Vinalhaven/North Haven 3

At Searsport May 24, the hosts made it a doubleheader sweep with a nine-run win over the islanders. Searsport scored six in the second, one in the third, three in the sixth and two in the seventh, while Vinalhaven/North Haven scored one in the fourth and two in the fifth.

Leading the hosts at the plate were Allison Walker (double), Brittany Ward (2 singles, 2 runs), Melinda Ogden (4 singles, 3 runs), Brianna Boyle (4 singles, run), Anna Bucklin (5 singles, 2 runs), Alicen Brooks (3 singles, run), Jaci Harriman (single, run) and Alivia Cross (single, run).

For the visitors, Ashley Davis-Oakes (single, run), Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes (2 singles, run), Ashley Hamilton (single), Bethany Candage (2 singles) and Bailey Wadleigh (2 singles) keyed the offense.

Ward pitched for Searsport, allowing eight hits and six walks, with seven strikeouts. Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes pitched for Vinalhaven/North Haven, allowing 21 hits and seven walks, with five strikeouts.

Searsport 7, Vinalhaven/North Haven 5

At Searsport May 24, the hosts prevailed in a battle of Vikings, the first of two games on the day between the squads. Searsport scored two in the first and third innings and one in the second, fourth and sixth frames, while the islanders scored one in the first, third and seventh innings and two in the fifth.

Leading the hosts on offense were Allison Walker (single, 2 runs), Brittany Ward (3 singles, 2 runs), Melinda Ogden (2 singles, 2 runs), Anna Bucklin (single), Jaci Harriman (single) and Alicen Brooks (double, single, run).

For the visitors, Ashley Davis-Oakes (2 singles, run), Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes (2 doubles, single, 2 runs), Ashley Hamilton (2 singles), Bethany Candage (single) and Tracie Webster (single) paced the offense.

Brittany Ward pitched for Searsport, allowing 10 hits and five walks, with eight strikeouts. Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes pitched for Vinalhaven/North Haven, allowing 10 hits and four walks, with one strikeout.
