Vinalhaven-North Haven diamond athletes ready for playoff push
Vinalhaven — The following is a synopsis of the 2014 Vinalhaven/North Haven baseball team:
Coach/years coached current team: Matt Slivinsky, 12th year.
Last year's record/playoff information: 0-10, 10th in Western Class D. The Vikings did not qualify for the playoffs.
Roster: Seniors Owen Bineau-Williams (utility) and Zeb Campbell (outfield, shortstop, pitcher); juniors Noah Slivinsky (catcher, pitcher, shortstop), Everett Webster (third base), Avery Waterman (outfield), Ben Beckman (utility) and Adam Young (outfield); sophomore Lewis Cray (pitcher, catcher, shortstop); freshmen Cody Hamilton (first base), Liam Thomas (pitcher, catcher, utility), Chase Wadleigh (infield) and Kaleb Campbell (outfield); and eighth-graders Elijah Ames (pitcher, catcher, shortstop) and Andrew Moody (second base).
Known graduation loss: Shane Carlsen.
Significant impact players: Waterman, Slivinsky and Campbell.
Team strengths: Young pitching.
Team goals: To get better as the season goes on and make the postseason.
Top league opponents: Richmond, Buckfield, Valley of Bingham, Greenville and Searsport.
Outlook: Things are already looking up for the islanders after sweeping a doubleheader with Forest Hills of Jackman, since the Penobscot Bay squad failed to win a game last year. Losing only one senior brings back plenty of experienced players, but having such a small roster means Vinalhaven will have to stay healthy and keep its mind on baseball if they hope to make playoff noise in June.
