Island softball team blanks visiting Vikings, baseball squad shut out

Vinalhaven — The Vinalhaven-North Haven baseball and softball teams got their spring diamond campaigns underway on Saturday, April 15 and ended the day with a couple of shutouts — as the island softball squad experienced the sweet taste of victory.

In the "Battle of the Vikings,” the islanders and Searsport Vikings, the host softball team posted a 12-0 victory, while the baseball squad was not as fortunate, as it dropped a 10-0 decision to the two-time defending state Class D champions.

Baseball

Searsport 10, Vinalhaven-North Haven 0

At Vinalhaven April 15, the two-time defending state Class D champs began the campaign with a shutout win over the islanders. Searsport scored two runs in the first inning, two in the second, two in the third and four in the seventh.

Leading the visitors at the plate were Barrett Grant (2 singles, RBI, 2 stolen bases), Ben Powell (2 singles, 4 stolen bases, 2 RBIs), Mitchell Philbrook (single, 4 stolen bases, 2 RBIs), Cameron Watt (RBI, 2 stolen bases), Noah Clark (single, RBI, 2 stolen bases), Steven Perkins (single, RBI) and Isaiah Runci (single, RBI).

Elijah Ames (2 singles) and Joseph Hopkins (single) keyed the hosts.

Barrett Grant, Isaiah Runci and Noah Clark pitched for Searsport, allowing three hits and no walks, with nine strikeouts. Elijah Ames, Tim Farrelly and Mitchell Hopkins pitched for the islanders.

Softball

Vinalhaven-North Haven 12, Searsport 0 (5 inns.)

At Vinalhaven April 15, the islanders started the regular season with a dominant win over the visitors.

Gilleyanne Davis-Oakes spun a no-hitter in the pitching circle for Vinalhaven-North Haven as she walked three and struck out six in the victory. Mikayla Alley pitched for Searsport.

Leading the islanders at the plate were Hannah Ames (3 runs, 2 singles, double, RBI, 6 stolen bases), Paige Dennison (run, single, RBI, 2 stolen bases), Davis-Oakes (run, single, 2 RBIs, double, 2 stolen bases), Déja Doughty (run), Ashlyn Littlefield (run, 2 RBIs, double, triple), Carolyn Hopkins (run, single, RBI), Marina Davis (run), Amber Shane (run) and Cheyenne Bickford (2 runs, single, double).
