I'm starting to feel the pressure to get things done before snow flies. The ducks are still around, only because we don’t have freezer space at the moment, but the turkeys already have an appointment at Jason’s just before Thanksgiving.

A breast cancer walk-a-thon will be held Saturday, Oct. 5, at 9 a.m. at the Unity Raceway.
Arborea & Christopher Paul Stelling will be giving a concert Friday, Oct. 4, at 7:30 p.m. at the Unity College Center for the Performing Arts. Arborea is the husband and wife duo Buck and Shanti Curran. Since forming in 2005, the avant-folk duo has released five albums and performed throughout the US, UK, and Europe. The Northern Solstice Alpaca Farm will present "Parasite Identification and Management" at the Alpaca Center of New England Saturday, Oct. 5, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Snacks will be provided. This is a hands-on workshop on performing your own alpaca and livestock fecal examinations. Microscopes, centrifuge and supplies will be available for your use during the class. Feel free to bring your own equipment and a sample to test. The fee is $75 per household or farm. Unity Barn Raisers will be holding a Day of Service Saturday Oct. 5 from 12:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. The group is looking for projects for worthy causes and volunteers to take on those projects! On Sunday, Oct. 6, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., MOFGA will hold an Orchard Fall Soil Preparation Workshop and Volunteer Workday with John Bunker at the new Maine Heritage Orchard just north of the MOFGA Education Center and the Fairgrounds on the Lee Crosby Road in Unity.Learn how to fall-fertilize soil in preparation for next year’s spring fruit-tree planting. 125 individual apple tree sites will be prepared for planting in April 2014. Come for an hour or two, or come all day. Lunch will be provided for all attendees.
Oct. 7-11 will be Fall Cleanup Week for all items not included in the regular trash pick up. Call Sullivan's Waste at 948-2658 for details. There is a fee for this pick up.

The Town of Unity is partnering with KVCOG again this year for a Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day Saturday, Oct. 5 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. The event will be held at the Pittsfield transfer station at 601 Peltoma Ave. You must pre-register at the Town Office prior to Oct. 5. Some items included in this collection are old oil-based paint, gas, motor oil, pesticides, cleaners and pool chemicals.
