Union selectmen name Feyler deputy treasurer in emergency meeting
Union — Union Town Manager Jay Feyler was appointed deputy treasurer at an emergency Board of Selectmen meeting Oct. 12.
Feyler will act on behalf of Treasurer Linda McAllister, who is away on medical leave until at least Oct. 29. As there are no sick leave provisions associated with the treasurer position, the town was unable to pay bills without a deputy treasurer to act in McAllister's stead, selectmen said.
McAllister had previously named Feyler deputy treasurer, but the appointment was deemed invalid since Feyler had not been delegated any specific duties, as is required by law.
Feyler submitted a letter of resignation for that post as clarification at 9 a.m on Oct. 12. The Board of Selectmen immediately installed him as deputy treasurer with all attendant duties and responsibilities of a treasurer according to Maine municipal law.
Feyler will act as deputy treasurer until McAllister returns, or until June 2013.
Selectmen said that this issue is different from the referendum issue to be discussed at a public hearing Tuesday, Oct. 16 at 6 p.m. before the regularly scheduled selectmen's meeting.
Article 2 proposes changing the treasurer position from an elected position to an appointment by the town manager, which would then be ratified by the municipal officers.
Although the town will now be able to pay bills and salaries, Feyler told the Board of Selectmen that due to abrupt nature of McAllister's departure, the town will likely incur penalties on invoices that cannot be located promptly.
"We don't need any more negative publicity," said Feyler.
