Unbeaten Mariners nail down doubleheader sweep of host Eagles

Oceanside boys use sizzling free-throw shooting to earn win

Newcastle — It is fun to be an Oceanside basketball fan these days, as both the Mariner boys and girls squads have sailed to 3-0 marks on the young season.

Both Oceanside squads defeated host Lincoln Academy in a doubleheader Friday, Dec. 14, with the Mariner boys winning 61-53 and the girls coming out on top 61-50.

While information for the girls game will appear later with this story, the boys contest was tight throughout, as the Mariners trailed 8-5 after one quarter and led 24-22 and 45-37 at the conclusion of the other two stanzas.

Oceanside essentially nailed down the victory thanks to sizzling foul shooting, as the Mariners made 25-of-29 free throws (86 percent).

Keying the Mariners offensively were Nick Judge with 13 points; Isaiah Stone-Patterson, 11; Shea Davenport and Nick Mazurek, both nine; David Gould and Tyler Gilson, both six; Matt Zable, four; and Hunter Grindle, three.

For the Eagles of Newcastle, A.J. Oliver netted 14 points; Sawyer Pinkham and John Reilly, both eight; Tom Masters, seven; Seward Matel, three; Devin Scherer and Luke Bibber, both two; and Grady Leeman, one. Lincoln Academy iced 15-of-25 free throws (60 percent).

The two teams combined to sink 40-of-54 foul shots (74 percent).

The Oceanside boys are ranked first and Mariner girls third in the early-season Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B.
