Unbeaten GSB tops Boothbay for championship
Waldoboro — It was no secret to Busline League middle school teams that the Great Salt Bay eighth-grade girls were the cream of the crop in the large school division this season.
Any doubt of that fact was put to rest during the championship game Saturday, Jan. 19 at Medomak Middle School, when the top-seeded Cougars of Damariscotta faced No. 3 Boothbay Region Elementary School for the crown.
GSB (14-0) jumped to an early lead and the Wildcats (11-4) never recovered as the Cougars clawed to the title with a 40-23 victory, at the same time capping an undefeated season.
Great Salt Bay led 17-6, 30-8 and 38-11 at the quarter breaks, while the team's reserves were outscored 12-2 in the fourth quarter — though not enough to help the Wildcats complete the comeback.
Brie Wajer led the balanced GSB scoring with 12 points, while Sophie Schumacher added eight; Bailey Plourde and Brianna Genthner, both seven; and Mary Reid, Nadia Smith and Kaitlyn Feltis, all two.
For Boothbay, Nicole Clark scored seven points, while MacKenzie Abbott added five; Angie Perkins, four; Collette Bertin Alexis Welch and Cagney O'Brien, all two; and Erica James, one.
Great Salt Bay defeated No. 8 Searsport and No. 4 Oceanside Blue of Thomaston/Rockland to advance to the finals, while No. 3 Boothbay bested No. 6 Oceanside White and No. 2 Camden-Rockport to earn a berth in Saturday's championship game.
