U.S. National Toboggan Championships begin Feb. 8

Camden — The 23rd annual toboggan nationals gets under way Friday, Feb. 8 at the Camden Snow Bowl.

In addition to two-, three- and four-person teams racing down an ice-covered chute at speeds of about 40 mph, competing for the best time, there will be various vendors, a beer and wine challenge, chili and chowder challenge, mechanical bull rides, as well as the tubing hill and slopes open for the weekend.

Below is a schedule of events:

Feb. 8

10 a.m. to 7 p.m. — Team registration and toboggan inspection in Tobogganville

10 a.m. to 4p.m. — Toboggan chute open to public $5 per person (conditions permitting)

3 to 7 p.m. — Mechanical bull rides

Noon to 5 p.m. — Tube Hill open to public $5 per person per hour (conditions permitting)

3 to 7 p.m. Down the Chute Beer & Wine challenge West Bay Rotary Tent

7 p.m. —  Banff Mountain Film Festival at Camden Hills Regional High School

10 a.m. to 8 p.m. — Bonfire, food vendors, souvenir sales, music, skiing and snowboarding on Snow Bowl slopes

 

Feb. 9

7 to 11 a.m. — Team registration and toboggan inspection at info booth in Tobogganville

7 a.m. to 5 p.m. — Bus shuttle service from downtown Camden ($8 limited on-site parking)

8 to 10:30 a.m. First runs for two- and three-person teams for (First run must be done by 10:30 or teams forfeit that run)

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Snow Bowl open for skiing, snowboarding and tubing

10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Mechanical bull rides

10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. — Second runs for two- and three-person teams

11 a.m. to 2 p.m. — Chili Challenge in West Bay Rotary Tent

1 p.m. —  First runs for experiment division

1:30 to 4 p.m. — First runs for four-person teams

7 p.m. — “Deer, Moose, Ticks and Hicks,” a 16-county tour with Comedian Juston McKinney at Camden Opera House.

 

Feb. 10

8 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Bus shuttle from downtown Camden ($8 limited on-site parking)

9 a.m. — Qualifying runs for four-person teams

9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Snow Bowl open for skiing, snowboarding and tubing

11 a.m. — Second runs for experimental division

Noon — Final runs begin with two-person teams, then proceeding with threes, fours and experimental. The top 25 best combined times for the two-person and three-person division, top 50 four-person division and top 5 from the experimental teams advance to the finals.

Approximately 3 p.m. — Awards ceremonies and drawings
