Two times the blues June 9
Rockland — The weekly blues series will host a special two-band night June 9 featuring Shawn Holt and the Teardrops; and the Popa Chubby Band. The double starts early, at 6:30 p.m., and tickets are $20, available at the door or in advance by calling 596-6055.
On May 8, Shawn Holt and the Teardrops won the Blues Music Award for Best New Artist Debut for their debut recording on Blind Pig Records, “Daddy Told Me.” Shawn is the son of the late legendary bluesman Magic Slim, who performed at the 2011 North Atlantic Blues Festival in Rockland.
“I want to thank everybody that gave me an opportunity to carry on my father’s great blues tradition and front one of the best blues bands of the last 30 years. I want to thank my father for putting a guitar in my hands at 16 and insisting that I develop my own sound,” Shawn said when receiving the BMA in Memphis.
Popa Chubby returns
Last summer’s blues festival featured a rockin’ performance by Popa Chubby, who has traversed the genres from punk to blues to soul and rock over the years. He and his band are touring in support of their latest album, “Universal Breakdown Blues,” which marks a premeditated return to the blues, wich has always been the foundation of his playing style.
Upcoming in the weekly series are: June 16, the Mikey Junior Band ($10); June 23, the Patti Parks Band ($10); June 30, the Peter Novelli Band ($10); and July 7, the Jason Elmore Band ($10). For more information, visit northatlanticbluesfestival.com and click on the Time Out Blues link.
The countdown to this year’s North Atlantic Blues Festival, July 12 and 13, has begun; advance tickets, available on the website, are $25 for either day or $50 for the full weekend.
