Rockport — On a cool, foggy Saturday morning of homecoming weekend, a small group of runners set out on the "Race for the Trail 5K," a fundraising event to help build a safer running and Nordic ski trail at Camden Hills Regional High School.

CHRHS graduate Ben Trapani won the Oct. 8 event handily with a time of 17 minutes and 18 seconds, while Jala Tooley was the top female finisher in 22:00.

Winners were awarded gift certificates from Maine Sport Outfitters and the Samoset Resort.

Many of the runners were parents and supporters of the current high school and middle school cross-country teams. They are keenly aware of the rough conditions of the course that necessitate building a safer trail for runners, said Shawn Stockman.

The current course, riddled with holes, ruts, roots and rocks, strays off of school property, which the school cannot properly maintain. To alleviate this, a group of volunteers has formed the Windjammer Trailblazers to help mark, clear and build a new trail entirely within the school’s property lines by fall of 2017, Stockman said.
