Tour Portsmouth with Five Town adult ed
Rockport — Five Town CSD Adult and Community Education, along with Central Lincoln County and Regional School Unit 40 adult education, is offering a one-day trip to Portsmouth, N.H., Saturday, May 17.
Portsmouth, founded in 1623, is the third oldest city in the nation. It offers many varied activities and is referred to as Little Boston by Frommer's Travel Guides. The city offers a wide variety of activities and would keep anyone occupied for a full day. Market Square offers walking tours, art galleries, bookstores, antique shops, and several ethnic restaurants. Strawbery Banke (the original name of Portsmouth) Museum affords visitors an opportunity to visit and view many historic buildings on their 10-acre site, guiding visitors to this outdoor museum through the history of Portsmouth with costumed interpreters providing demonstrations of trades and insights into earlier times.
For the more adventurous, the USS Albacore Museum allows guests to board the 1953 submarine and get a feel for submarine life. Walkers can enjoy the gardens of Prescott Park. Beer lovers can check out Smuttynose Brewing Co. and Red Hook Ale Brewery, both of which offer free brewery tours and tastings. The coach bus will leave Camden Hills Regional High School at 8 a.m., arriving in Portsmouth approximately 11 a.m. The return trip will leave Portsmouth at 5:30 p.m., arriving back in Rockport around 8 p.m. There will be additional stops to pick up and drop off passengers in Damariscotta and Waldoboro.
