Three nights of Rockland blues
Rockland — The city’s blues series at Time Out Pub, 275 Main St., finishes out the month with a couple of extra shows. On Friday, Aug. 23, at the earlier time of 6 p.m., Lucky Peterson will perform. In the usual Monday slot Aug. 26 at 7 p.m., Mississippi Heat returns to town. And on Wednesday, Aug. 28, from 7 to 9 p.m., Charlie A. Court will perform.
Lucky (born Judge Kenneth) Peterson was discovered by blues legend Willie Dixon as a toddler, released his first record at age 5 and soon after appeared on “The Tonight Show.” He grew up to become a master of the guitar, keyboard and microphone. Along the way, he fell into a lifestyle that threatened to belie his nickname, but he turned it around, thanks to rehab and his church in Dallas. Peterson’s songs speak of struggles and salvation, using the gritty clarity of acoustic roots/blues (with modern touches) as their main musical vehicle. His DVD “Live At The 55 Arts Club Berlin” featuring Tamara Peterson was nominated for a 2013 Blues Music Award.
The multi-member Mississippi Heat fills the stage with traditional Chicago blues, whether golden standards or fresh originals true to the genre. Band leader, harp player and composer Pierre Lacocque's vision has not wavered since he founded the band in 1991. Mississippi Heat has always had an ensemble sound; all its musicians are featured and welcome to contribute on stage and on recordings.
Nova Scotia-bred A’Court played the North Atlantic Blues Festival last year and is headed back to town with a new CD, “Triumph & Disaster,” featuring 14 new songs showcasing his soulful vocals and colorful guitar playing. A’Court has toured extensively throughout Canada and abroad, sharing stages with everyone from James Cotton to Procol Harum.
Admission is $15, $10 for Charlie A’Court’s show. There will be no show on Labor Day Monday, Sept. 2. For more information, visit northatlanticbluesfestival.com.
