Thomaston — A 38-year-old Thomaston man was arrested on his birthday in connection with several thefts in the area, said police.

Paul A. Heino was apprehended on a warrant by Thomaston Police Department Sgt. Timothy Hoppe Feb. 1 after a witness identified Heino as the person they had seen breaking into a car a week earlier.

Heino is believed to be linked to thefts of change and other items from vehicles parked near Oceanside West High School during sporting events, said Police Chief Kevin Haj.

The burglaries have not been forceful, Haj said — Heino was just taking advantage of unlocked doors.

Haj encourages people that have been victimized by these "crimes of opportunity" to come forward, as he said some cases were not reported immediately.

Haj said since Heino has a prior record, the thefts are elevated to felony offenses.

Heino has been released on bail and is expected in court March 27.
