Torah - Words of Life, part 2

Deuteronomy 4:1-43

4:9,23,31. “Do not forget…” What is the relationship between not forgetting and obedience to the torah? How does God’s Word “depart” from our hearts? How do we keep it there?

4:5-8. God’s intention was that Israel’s faithful obedience to God’s torah would make her a light to the nations. However, that light could be dimmed or snuffed out if Israel became IDLE (4:9-14) or followed IDOLS (15-31). How might those same things derail us today? (cf. Judges 2:10; Mt. 5:16; Phil. 2:14-16; Eph. 6:4; 2Tim. 1:5; 1Pet. 2:12-17)?

4:15-31. Ancient peoples carved figurines to represent their gods or characteristics of their gods. How was this their attempt to control or limit these gods? Today we do the same thing, not by fashioning statues but by saying things like, “My god is not like that. My God is ________” What types of things have you heard people say as they have “fashioned their own gods”?

So what is the importance of God remaining without form (4:12; cf. Ex. 3:14)?

4:15-31. You and I may not worship statues today, but what idols tempt us?

4:24. What do you think it means that God is a jealous God (cf. Ex. 34:14)?

Why is God’s jealousy not sinful (cf. 4:32-38)? What does His jealousy mean for Israel? For us today?

4:32-40. According to these words, is Israel’s salvation something she earned? What then is the right role of obedience in Israel’s life (cf. 4:5-8)? According to Ephesians 2:8-10, how is it the same for us today?

4:41-43. Moses teaching again about the cities of refuge (cf. Nu. 35:6-34) reminded the people of their propensity to and God’s provision for sin. Why would this be so important for Israel to remember? Why is it so important for us to remember (cf. James 5:16,19-20; 1 John 1:8-9; 2:1)?
