The RIG and Penobscot Bay YMCA Agree on Merger
The Penobscot Bay YMCA and the teen organization known as the RIG have agreed to merge into one non-profit entity that will ensure the continuation of services for area teens.
The merger will take effect on October 1, 2013. The YMCA will assume operations of the RIG on October 1, maintaining the same staff, schedule and activities that are currently in place, for local high school students. The RIG will be moving from its Elm Street location to the YMCA’s Teen Center facility, which is located at 10 Knowlton Street in Camden.
The reasons behind the merger of the two organizations, which have parallel missions, include the potential to enhance services for area youth and to ensure the long-term sustainability of RIG activities.
“I’m thrilled to have the RIG merging with the YMCA,” said Nicole Fuller RIG, Director. "After several months of talks, and due diligence work, we are confident that this is the right decision for our organization.” Frances Wheeler-Berta, Chair of the RIG Board of Directors, reinforced the organization’s commitment by saying, “Ultimately, we felt as an organization that this was the right thing to do for our participants. We feel this arrangement will continue to support the Rig's mission and also ensure that services are available for the foreseeable future.”
YMCA Executive Director Troy Curtis indicated the YMCAs intent to make this a seamless transition: “We thoroughly understand the importance of providing a place where teens can meet and socialize.” said Curtis. “It is our intent to continue to offer programs and services without interruption and with as few changes as possible.”
RIG programming will begin on October 1st at the Teen Center, where a dedicated space has been provided for this age group. The space will available to teens that are in high school on Tuesdays and Friday afternoons from 2-6 PM.
Although efficiencies have been released via this merger, donations and community support remain crucial to the overall success and sustainability of RIG programming. Those with questions regarding this merger are encouraged to call the YMCA for additional information.
