Last week, the Samoset Resort in Rockport held the 39th Annual Maine’s Fisherman’s Forum, an event that helps to provide continuing education for the public and those in the fishing industries about fisheries and marine resource issues. On Friday, Governor Paul LePage attended the forum to discuss the issues surrounding European Green Crabs, an invasive species of crab that are currently a threat to Maine’s shellfish industry.
During a break from the forum, Governor LePage took a scheduled tour around to some of the local business in Rockland, and one of the places he wanted to visit was the Rockland LBC!
Heidi and Joel spent some time talking with Governor LePage and his senior economic advisor John Butera. After talking about the three LBC locations, the Governor was very interested to learn more about Heidi and Joel’s two other dog centered businesses: Fidelis Biscuit Co. and the Tug ME Toys. The discussion turned to some of the challenges Heidi and Joel face, specifically the fact that they've run into some distribution problems with the Tug ME Toys. The tugs are braided by hand and only partially completed by Maine prisoners at the Charleston Correctional Facility. While it's a great program for the State system, it's lead to issues about where the toys can be distributed due to an antiquated federal law established during the great depression. Governor LePage and Mr. Butera were very intrigued by this problem and said that they would look into it in hopes of finding a solution.
At the end of his visit, Governor LePage purchased a fun red, white, and blue Tug ME Toy and a tin of blueberry Fidelis Biscuit Co. treats for his two dogs. He also gifted us with an autographed copy of Baxter in the Blaine House, a delightful children’s book featuring one of his pups, Baxter. Baxter in the Blaine House details a tour of the Blaine House through the eyes of Baxter and features all of his favorite places (like one of his beds that is tucked under the warming oven in the kitchen). It’s written by Paula Benoit, who also helps Baxter write his own blog, and illustrated by Thomas Block.
All of us at the LBC were very honored that Governor LePage chose to visit us. We wish him and his family all the best and hope that his pups enjoy their new toy and treats!!
Until next time, Loyal fans!
