The First wins two of three in homestand

Rockland — The First, the Rockland-based American Legion baseball team, has experienced a mixed bag of results through the first half of the regular season.

The First went 2-1 in its three-game homestand as they split a Saturday, June 28 doubleheader with The Red Barn of Augusta and then defeated Messalonskee on Monday, June 30.

The First, which includes players from Oceanside and Camden Hills high schools, is 3-4 on the season.

The First 6, Messalonksee 0

At Rockland June 30, the hosts got a supreme effort from Nick Mazurek both on the hill and at the plate as they picked up the shutout win.

Mazurek went the distance on the hill for The First as he allowed four hits and no walks, with 11 strikeouts. He also belted a two-run home run in the third inning, while J.T. Tobin homered and Drew Townsend added an RBI-double in the win.

At Rockland June 28, the hosts cruised to victory in the second game of the day's doubleheader. The First put on an offensive clinic as they scored in every frame but the fourth.

Chandler Crans tossed a complete-game one-hitter as he walked none and struck out nine for The First. The hosts also got singles and doubles from both Mazurek and Connor Graffam, while Andrew Hall also scored three runs.

At Rockland June 28, the visitors stymied the hosts in the first game of the day's doubleheader.

Mazurek, Mike Wolff and Mazlin Higbee singled for The First.
