Rockland — The First, a Rockland-based American Legion baseball team, continued its up-and-down season with three games in three days.

The playoffs swing in on Thursday, July 17 and will feature a pair of play-in games as the third seed will host the sixth seed and the fourth will host the fifth. The winner of those games will advance to the four-team Zone 2 playoffs — along with the top two seeds — to be played July 19-21.
The winner of the Zone 2 playoffs will advance to the state tournament.
In The First's win over Gardiner July 8, starting pitcher Caleb Jacob allowed three hits over five innings, while Ryan Allender recorded the save. Allender, Ben Rollins and Joe Chamberlain singled for the hosts, who scored two runs early in the game after a batter struck out and the Gardiner catcher overthrew to first base in an attempt to throw out the runner after a passed ball.
Those runs proved the difference in an otherwise close game. Zac Roman also had an impressive diving catch in left field for The First.
In The First's loss to Madison July 7, Roman rapped three hits, while Allender and Connor Graffam each had two hits.
The First has four more regular-season games before the playoffs begin Thursday, July 17. The First has road games at Franklin County and Madison, along with a doubleheader against Franklin County. The doubleheader was slated to be played July 5, but was rained out.
