Sweet launches latest
Damariscotta — Caldecott Honoree illustrator Melissa Sweet of Rockport will join celebrated poet and anthologist Paul B. Janeczko for the launch of their new book “Firefly July: a Year of Very Short Poems” Saturday, March 29, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the downtown Maine Coast Book Shop
Recipient of five starred reviews and a March selection for the Spring 2014 Kids' Indie Next List, “Firefly July” offers 36 very short seasonal poems in a collection that reminds readers young and old that a few perfect words and pictures can make the world glow.
There will be a short poetry workshop and reading, giveaways and book signing. Third and fourth grade students from the Center for Teaching and Learning will recite their favorite poems from the book as special guests.
Sweet has illustrated nearly one hundred books for children including “A River of Words: The Story of William Carlos Williams,” a 2009 Caldecott Honor Book. She also is the creator of “Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy’s Parade,” a 2012 Robert F. Sibert Medal Winner. Janeczko of Hebron is the anthologist of almost 50 collections including the award-winning “A Poke in the I,” “A Kick in the Head” and “A Foot in the Mouth.” He also is the author of “Requiem: Poems of the Terezín Ghetto” and “Worlds Afire,” a collection of poems about the 1944 circus fire in Hartford, Conn.
