‘Swan Lake’ flocks to Strand in HD
Rockland — The Strand Theatre, 345 Main St., is expanding its HD Broadcast programming for the fall to include Matthew Bourne’s innovative adaptation of the ballet “Swan Lake” Tuesday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m.
When it premiered at London’s Sadler’s Wells dance house in 1995, Bourne’s triumphant re–interpretation of “Swan Lake” turned tradition upside down, taking the dance world by storm. An iconic production, perhaps best-known for replacing the traditional female corps de ballet with a menacing male ensemble, “Swan Lake” was filmed at Sadler’s Wells in 2011. The stellar cast includes Richard Winsor as the lead Swan/Stranger, Dominic North as The Prince and Nina Goldman as The Queen.
With more than 30 international theater awards including three Tony Awards and an Olivier Award, “Swan Lake” has been acclaimed as a landmark achievement on the stage, becoming the longest running ballet in the West End and on Broadway.
Tickets to the Strand screening are $15, $10 for students and $7 each for group tickets of 10 or more; contact the theater for student and group tickets. The Strand also offers the Met Opera Live in HD, NT Live plays, and soon Globe on Screen, featuring productions filmed at Shakespeare’s Globe in London.
