Summer shape note singing at St. Paul's

Jun 20, 2011

Waldoboro — The Damariscotta Area 4th Sunday Sacred Harp Singing will take place Sunday, June 26 from 2 to 5 p.m. at St. Paul's Union Chapel on Dutchneck Road). There will be a potluck supper to follow, so attendees are asked to bring a dish to pass.

As always, beginners, curious friends and passing strangers are invited to join the group in song. The singing is primarily from "The Sacred Harp," 1991 Denson edition, a shape note tune book that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fugue-ing tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day. Books will be available available to borrow or purchase.

The chapel is on the left fork of Dutchneck Road, which is off Route 32 south about 2.5 miles from Hannaford. For more information, contact Barb Ames at 721-9732 or send email to singing@mainesacredharp.org.
