Waldoboro — The Downeast School of Massage in Waldoboro will host its 14th annual Student Massage Clinic starting March 1.

The clinic is an opportunity for members of the community to become familiar with massage, and for students of the school to get a taste of the “real world” — taking on individual clients with individual physical realities — in a secure, supervised setting. Special free clinics include pregnancy massage and Children’s Massage scheduled periodically throughout the clinic calendar.

“Each student clinic has been a real success story,” said Nancy Dail, director of the Downeast School of Massage, in a news release. “People from the community will get a chance to receive massages for a very reasonable price, and it is a wonderful opportunity for students to work with people they have never met before, helping the students to develop the personal interaction skills that are so important in a private clinic setting."

The institution at DSM is licensed by the state of Maine. Students receive more than 600 hours of training in anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, nutrition, pathology, ethics and related subjects. As part of the required program for the Swedish Massage Course, Clinic rounds out the student’s experience in a practical setting. Each student must complete 57 hours of therapeutic massage in clinic as well as outside logged hours and case histories. Students actively participate in specialties such as Sports Massage, Shiatsu, and Energy courses.

Starting Friday, March 1, the clinic will be open on a variety of Fridays, and then Wednesdays and Fridays in August throughout the clinic season. The clinic will operate until Aug. 28, 2013. A complete schedule of dates and times is available at the school and on the school website at downeastschoolofmassage.net. A donation of $32, a portion of which goes toward the Student Continuing Education Scholarship Fund, is requested. A senior citizen discount is offered.

DSM is located just two miles from Route 1 and Moody’s Diner, off Route 220 on Moose Meadow Lane in Waldoboro. To request a detailed copy of clinic dates and times or to make an appointment to receive a supervised student massage, call the Downeast School of Massage at 832-5531 or email downeastmassage@gmail.com.
