Stinson games bring back friends, memoriesRockland District High School graduates converge to raise money in friend's honor
Rockland — The 21st annual William Stinson Jr. Memorial Alumni Basketball Games, an event that pitted former Rockland District High School student-athletes, with a few Oceanside High School graduates sprinkled in, against one another in competitive contests, were held Saturday, Dec. 28.
Stinson was a three-sport Rockland Tiger student-athlete who died in a drunk driving accident on Oct. 30, 1993. After his death, a memorial scholarship fund was established in his name.
In December of that year the first games were held "as a way to remember our friend as well as to raise money for his scholarship fund," said Tammy Barrows, a RDHS graduate who has spearheaded the event for more than two decades.
For 20 years, the Stinson scholarship has been given to RDHS graduates to aid in their secondary education. Barrows said although RDHS is no more, the event continues to be held in "remembrance for our friend" and to "respectively recognize the history of our alma mater."
The games used to be held at the former RDHS, which now is Oceanside High School.
Scholarships in Stinson's name are now awarded to Oceanside High School graduates. A few former Georges Valley High School student-athletes also participated in Saturday's games. In the past, GVHS alumni games were held at Oceanside West High School, the former GVHS, in honor of Nathan Mitchell, but that event was not held this year.
