High school state, conference championships postponed for Feb. 8-9Midcoast wrestling, cheering, basketball, swimming, track athletes on hold
Mother Nature currently is wrecking havoc with significant snowfall expected throughout the Pine Tree State Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, with some weather predictions of two feet or more of the white stuff.
And that forecast has had a significant domino effect on scheduled high school sporting events involving a bundle of Midcoast student-athletes.
In preparation for the inclement weather, the Maine Principals' Association has postponed the state wrestling and state cheering championships, both scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9.
The state wrestling championships will be moved to Saturday, Feb. 16 and will be contested in three separate locations. Class A will be at Sanford High School, Class B at Fryeburg Academy and Class C at Foxcroft Academy in Dover-Foxcroft. All three meets will begin at 9:30 a.m.
The state wrestling championships originally were scheduled for the Augusta Civic Center, which would have encompassed all three classes. Now, Oceanside, Camden Hills, Medomak Valley and Belfast student-athletes will compete for titles a week later in Fryeburg, while Mount View of Thorndike student-athletes will compete a week later in Dover-Foxcroft.
The state cheering championships have been moved to Monday, Feb. 11 and will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the Bangor Auditorium, where the event originally was scheduled to be held. Medomak Valley will be involved in the Class B portion of the state competition.
The Panthers are scheduled to take the mat at 8:10 p.m.
In addition to the two state events that have been postponed, the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B swimming and diving championships, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 8, have been moved to Monday, Feb. 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Bath YMCA.
That event will include Belfast, Camden Hills, Oceanside and Medomak Valley student-athletes.
The Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B boys and girls basketball championships scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 also have been canceled. Those games will not be made up.
Medomak Valley and Oceanside were scheduled to meet in the 5 p.m. boys game, while Oceanside and Nokomis of Newport were scheduled to meet in the 7 p.m. girls contest.
By virtue of having more Heal Points than their opponents, the Panther boys and Mariner girls have earned league championships.
The KVAC Class B indoor track championships scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 9 at 9:30 a.m. at Bowdoin College in Brunswick also have been postponed.
The time of the event had originally changed to 4 p.m. in an effort to still hold the event, but it was officially postponed late Friday morning, Feb. 8, with a possibility it could be made up at another time.
