St. John's annual plant, bake sale
Thomaston — An opportunity for Midcoast gardeners to get something new for their garden this year is just around the corner at the The Episcopal Church of St. John Baptist.
This annual Plant and Bake Sale will be held from 8:30 a.m. to noon Saturday, May 17. The church is located at the corner of Green and Main streets (U.S. Route 1) in Thomaston.
The Plant Sale Committee promises an array of pots of locally dug and grown perennials, such as day lilies, iris (Dutch and Siberian), hostas, dahlias, lady’s mantle, poppies, among others; also ground covers such as ginger, violets, hearty geraniums, lily of the valley and evening primrose. In addition, a variety of annuals will be for sale including large zinnias of various colors, the chance to purchase houseplants, hanging plants, trees and bushes as well as pots, garden tools, books and supplies.
In the vegetable and herb department will be vegetable seedlings which will include blight-resistant tomato plants from Johnny’s Seeds of Maine, cucumbers and greens to name a few of what will be available to purchase. Descriptions of all the tomatoes will be posted to help home gardeners choose the perfect combinations for salads, slicing and snacking. In addition to the private donations, local nurseries and plant businesses have donated plants and garden supplies.
And to satisfy that sweet tooth, a wonderful assortment of baked goods, provided by the talented bakers of the church, will be for sale.
Master Gardener and Chairman Emily Rotch will be on hand to answer questions about plants and their care. Please note the earlier opening time of 8:30 a.m. to enable visitors to attend before heading out to the many plant sales scheduled that day.
