Spruce Head Pizza opens for the season May 23.

South Thomaston — Spruce Head Pizza, the home of true New York pizza, Buffalo wings and Italian delicatessen goods in the Midcoast Maine, opens for its third season Friday, May 23.

The SHP menu starts with the pizza, prepared with fresh dough made from scratch at the pizzeria, San Marzano tomatoes from Italy and super-premium mozzarella, freshly shredded from blocks on premises. SHP also offers hot dogs from Schaller & Weber in New York City, via Morse’s Sauerkraut in Waldoboro, served on either standard New England hot dog buns or Morse’s signature German pretzel rolls. Other menu items include wings (made the same way as at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, where they were invented), Italian hero sandwiches (at lunch only) and soft ice cream from the Hood company in Boston.

The pizza shop also carries a line of Italian specialty grocery products and deli items, including Prosciutto di Parma and Parmigiano-Reggiano, Pecorino Romano and Provolone cheeses, even a selection of wines (off-premises consumption only), all imported from Italy. Products from Micucci in Portland include proprietary tomato sauces, meatballs, sweet sausage, manicotti, stuffed shells and ravioli.

SHP is open Tuesdays through Saturdays, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. until Labor Day and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. from Labor Day to season’s end at Halloween. It is located at 20 Island Road in South Thomaston, just off Route 73 in the Spruce Head Village neighborhood on the road out to Spruce Head Island Harbor.
