Thomaston — On Dec. 7 at Rockland’s American Legion Post 1, South End Grocery’s Ugly Christmas Sweater Dance and Auction honored the true dogs of holiday sweaters and raised $3,300 to benefit the Pope Memorial Humane Society of Knox County (PMHSKC) new facility capital campaign.

PMHSKC donor Lyman Pope pledged to double the amount raised at this event, netting a final total of $6,600.

South End Grocery organized and hosted the event, with the support of Shurfine’s Community Rewards Program and Rockland’s American Legion Post 1.

It included a dance, hosted by emcee Mike Philips and with music by Crossin’ Mason Dixon; raffle; auction; and Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest. After careful deliberation by judges Mae Grant, Brice Smallwood, and Harry Mank, the Ugly Sweater Contest honorees were: Scott Michaud, first prize; Joan Vargas, second prize; and Karen Godfrey, third prize.

Steve Hiller, owner of South End Grocery, said: “We really enjoyed partnering with Belinda Landre and Commander Darry Leavitt of the American Legion to put on this great event. It was a fun way to ring in the holiday season and raise funds for the Pope Memorial Humane Society at the same time.”

“It was a wonderful party, and the creativity of the Ugly Sweater contestants was inspiring!” We are very grateful for this special Holiday gift from South End Grocery, the American Legion, and everyone who took part,” added PMHSKC Board President Richard Procopio.
