Rockport — Solar Maine, an alternative energy company, is open for business and many people stopped by their showroom at 1126 Commercial St. in Rockport to help them celebrate with an open house June 8.

“We were pretty busy earlier in the day and people keep coming in,” said Brendan Black. “People seem to be really interested about the services and products that we can provide. This, combined with our zero energy houses, we have the ability to save our customers a lot of money.”

With the increasing cost of utilities, people are forced to find alternative means of heating and cooling their homes, as well as alternative ways to produce energy, he said.

“This isn’t new technology,” Black said. “They have been building zero energy houses and using alternative forms of energy in Europe for years. It is just becoming accepted in the United States because of the influence the petroleum industry has in this country.”

Black said he feels with only about 11 percent acceptance, there is only one way for the industry to go and that is up.

“Once I explain the benefit to building a zero energy home versus a traditional-type house and using the alternative forms of energy we can supply it is really a no brainer,” he said.

According to Retail Manager Elizabeth Black, Solar Maine will not only serve as a retail outlet for energy efficient solutions but also will have workshops to educate customers and the public on the benefits of alternative forms of energy.

"Our focus is on making alternative forms of energy more affordable," said Black. "We hope to continue to grow with other efficient home products."

Black added, "We will also be able to walk our customers through step-by-step of the PACE Loan and Efficiency Maine paperwork to ensure that they receive the proper rebates."

Solar Maine offers complete design and installation packages. They can also help you take care of all of the rebate and tax credit paperwork. Maine Solar also offers direct sales of solar panels, inverters, racking equipment, heat pumps, hot water systems and more.
