‘Solar Flares and Northern Lights’
Rockland — Featured in Archipelago, the Island Institute store at 386 Main St., during July is “Of Solar Flares and Northern Lights,” a wall of artwork by Jean Kigel of Waldoboro. For the next few years, the sun’s super storms will threaten today’s communication systems and power grids; Kigel’s paintings capture their very real beauty.
Two paintings of local, dusk-enshrouded islands transport the viewer from dusk to night. In Kigel’s night paintings, fluttering light, created with her celebrated Asian brush techniques, evokes glowing, looping jellyfish. In these paintings, docks are awash in emerald, firs are bathed in azure and crimson.
Kigel specializes in Asian brush painting executed with watercolors and sumi on hand-made, Chinese papers and silk. She has traveled widely in Japan and China; and has studied with Japanese, Chinese and Vietnamese masters both abroad and in the United States.
