Thomaston — A record number of participants, course best times for the women's 3.1-mile distance and boys and girls one-mile runs and an overall winner with local ties was the scenario that played out Wednesday morning during the annual Thomaston Fourth of July Firecracker road races.

Overcast, rainy conditions greeted the 188 who showed up to participate in the 5-kilometer portion of the event and another 68 runners were involved in the children's one-mile course.

Those 256 overall participants were a record for the event, said first-year race director Lynn Snow.

The overall 5K winner was Brandon Waltz, 23, of Greene, who finished the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes and 48 seconds. Aric Odone, 34, of South Thomaston placed second at 18:22. Waltz is a native of South Thomaston and a Rockland District High School graduate.

The first female finisher was Annabelle Winters, 30, of Chicago, Ill., who crossed the course in 19:51. That bettered the previous fastest time by a woman on the 5K course of 20:19, set in 2006, said Snow.

It is believed the overall 5K course record by a male is 16:14, set in 2009, Snow said.

In Wednesday's children's one-mile fun run, Jamie Haufler, 11, of Acton, Mass. crossed the finish line in 5:29 and Ella Barry, 9, of Oyster Bay, N.Y. at 6:08. Prior to this year, the best times were 5:41 for a boy in 2010 and 6:17 for a girl in 2004.

The Firecracker event has been held for decades, including at one time being a 10-kilometer (6.2-mile) race.

"The weather was optimal for running and the turnout was spectacular," said Snow, who co-directed this year's event with her husband, Bob. " We learned a lot this year as first-year directors. We have a whole new appreciation for the Allan family [who] coordinated these races for many years. We are also very thankful for the many volunteers helping with the event, including the Allan family. We tried a couple of new techniques and these folks were absolutely terrific to work with."

Dan Allan, who worked the starting and finishing area of Wednesday's race, and his family, all of whom were part of the registration process this year, have spearheaded the event for years.
