Silhouette artist headed to Planet
Camden — On Saturday, Feb. 9, Planet will host a special pre-Valentine’s Day event. Ruth Monsell, a professional silhouettist with more than 30 years of experience, will create traditional, freehand-cut silhouettes of babies, children and adults, done from live five-minute sittings, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the shop, located at 10 Main St./Route 1. Reservations are recommended.
Although the least expensive form of portraiture, silhouettes can capture an amazing likeness and are loved for their simplicity, long history and traditional look. Often families have new ones cut to display alongside older family silhouettes. Silhouettes are particularly popular for gift giving occasions, including Valentine’s Day, since each one is a piece of art as unique as its subject.
Monsell of Damariscotta has become internationally known through her website, ArtfulHeirlooms.com, and by cutting profiles aboard five international cruise ships. She is in demand for weddings, reunions, organizations and corporate events throughout the United States and Canada. More than a dozen historical societies and museums in New England have called on her to demonstrate this increasingly rare art form.
Individual silhouettes are priced at $35 for two mirror image copies, with matting included; additional duplicates (ideal for gift giving) are $12 each. Optional frames will be available. Advance appointments for sittings are advised and may be made by phoning the artist at (866) 212-7288. Walk-ins will be accommodated as time permits. The artist also is also able to cut silhouettes of pets and loved loves not present from clear profile photographs.
