Sign of spring: Aldermere hosts tree-tapping demonstration

Feb 28, 2014

Rockport — Aldermere Farm in Rockport will hold a tree tapping demonstration Saturday, March 8, starting at 10 a.m. out in the sugar bush.

Participants will learn how to identify the right trees, and then will tap maple trees on the beautiful Aldermere Farm property. Most people will get a chance to try their hand at measuring trees, drilling, tapping in the spouts, or at setting buckets. A discussion will also take place on how to best gather the sap once it starts flowing and when and how to boil the sap to make maple syrup.

No experience is needed, just a willingness to learn and participate. Dress warmly and be prepared to walk through the snow/ice to the stand of maple trees. Call 236-2739 or email jlucas@mcht.org to pre-register you and your family and/or friends (space is limited). Meet at 70 Russell Ave. and then everyone will walk over to the sugar bush together.

The demonstration is free, but becoming a member of Maine Coast Heritage Trust, a statewide land conservation organization that owns and manages Aldermere Farm, allows you to learn more about all the offerings at Aldermere Farm and other MCHT preserves.
