Shutout City: Windjammers win, Mariners lose in recent days
The Camden Hills and Oceanside high school field hockey teams were witness to shutouts in recent days, though only the Windjammers benefited from those games.
The Mariners were downed 1-0 by Nokomis of Newport on Friday, Oct. 4, while the Windjammers bested Maranacook of Readfield 1-0 on Thursday, Oct. 3 in a pair of home games.
The following is a recap of those contests:
Nokomis 1, Oceanside 0
At Rockland Oct. 4, the Mariners were nipped at home by the talented Warriors in a battle of highly-ranked regional teams.
Kayla Braley scored the lone goal, off an assist from Lindsey Whitney, with 16:36 left in the first half.
Nokomis outshot Oceanside 11-3 and held a 14-5 edge in penalty corners. Zoe Billington made 10 saves in the cage for the hosts, while Kendra Underhill made three saves for the visitors.
“Zoe Billington has been doing a great job in the goal this season and had several very nice saves on good shots by Nokomis,” said Oceanside coach Joanna Hall. “Our defense had one momentary lapse and Nokomis capitalized. Overall, it was a good game by both teams and, although I would have liked to have scored, I am happy with how [we] played.”
In the Maine Principals' Association Heal Point Standings for Eastern Class B, Oceanside (8-3, 44.9745 points) is fourth, while Nokomis (11-0, 85.4082 points) is first in the 11-team region. The top eight teams qualify for the playoffs.
Camden Hills 1, Maranacook 0
At Rockport Oct. 3, the Windjammers blanked the visiting Black Bears.
Willow Grinnell scored the lone goal in the first half for Camden Hills.
The 'Jammers outshot the Black Bears 8-3 and led a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. Desi Dodd made three saves in the cage for Camden Hills, while Maranacook's goalie, whose name was unavailable, made six saves.
