Shape note singing set
Damariscotta — The 4th Sunday Damariscotta Area Sacred Harp Singing will be held Sunday, Jan. 26, at the home of Corrone and Ruth Ann Bryant, 552 Main St./Business Route 1. The group, which meets in Waldoboro during the summer months, will sing from 2 to 5 p.m.
All (with or without Sacred Harp singing experience) are most welcome. This is a free participatory event, not a performance. The singing is primarily from “The Sacred Harp,” a shape note tune book that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fugue-ing tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day.
There will be a potluck supper following the singing, so participants are asked to bring a dish to share. For more information, call 563-6083 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
