Shape note singing Jan. 27

Jan 21, 2013

Damariscotta — The Fourth Sunday Damariscotta Area Sacred Harp Singing will be held Sunday, Jan. 27, from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of Corrone and Ruth Ann Bryant at 552 Main St./Business Route 1. All (with or without shape note singing experience) are most welcome. This is a free participatory event, not a performance.

The singing is primarily from “The Sacred Harp,” a shape note tune book that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fugue-ing tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day.

There will be a potluck supper following the singing so please bring a dish to share. For more information, call 563-6083 or send email to singing@mainesacredharp.org.
