Shaffer brings ‘Desserted’ to mainland
Lincolnville — Kate Shaffer, one of North America’s Top 10 chocolatiers, extends an invitation to all chocolate lovers to join her as she shares recipes from “Desserted: Recipes and Tales from an Island Chocolatier” Sunday, May 18, from noon to 3 p.m. at Cellardoor Winery at the Vineyard, 367 Youngtown Road.
Shaffer is co-owner of Isle au Haut-based Black Dinah Chocolatiers, an award-winning artisanal chocolaterie with handcrafted chocolates made with local ingredients. “Desserted” was named a Top 25 cookbook of the year by Food & Wine Magazine.
Shaffer and her husband opened Black Dinah Chocolatiers in 2007, and their unique island-based business model has served as an inspiration and example for other entrepreneurs in remote locations. Shaffer is a lifelong cook and lover of all things related to food. She trained in culinary arts and hospitality through on-the-job training at various restaurants including chef and produce buyer at the Keeper’s House Inn on Isle au Haut, where she received acclaim for her expertly prepared foods and beautiful presentation. In addition to her culinary training, Kate holds a B.A. in English Literature from the University of California, Santa Cruz.
