Second annual Lobster Mac n Cheese Contest Sept. 20
Rockport — Who says lobsters go away after Labor Day? On the contrary, September and October are prime lobster months for Midcoast Maine’s annual Lobsterpalooza.
Come celebrate the fall lobster season with $10 lobster specials in restaurants Sept. 15-20, topped off with the 2nd annual Lobster Mac n Cheese contest on Saturday, Sept. 20. Thirty professional and amateur chefs will compete for the Lobster Mac n Cheese champion award, from 2 to 4 p.m. at Rockland Elks Club, 210 Rankin St., Rockland. New this year, the general public will be invited to taste the professional chefs’ creations by purchasing tickets for $10.
Restaurants throughout Maine will offer $10 lobster specials including everything from appetizers to lobster dinners. The exact special will vary from restaurant to restaurant, but all specials will be listed on the Maine Lobsterpalooza page at facebook.com/mainelobsterpalooza.
Restaurants from throughout Maine will compete for the title of Lobster Mac n Cheese Pro and Amateur chef of the year too. To date the following restaurants have registered to compete: Chowderhouse Restaurant, Rockland; DiMillo’s on the Water, Portland; Linda Bean’s Perfect Maine, Freeport; Graffam Brothers Seafood Market, Rockport; Kenduskeag Golf Course/Wrong Turn Pub, Kenduskeag; Hilton Garden Inn, Auburn; East Wind Inn in Tenants Harbor; The Black Harpoon, Port Clyde.
There is still time for interested Maine chefs to register to compete for the title of Lobsterpalooza Mac n Cheese Champion.
Contest entries can include any original recipe desired but must include Maine lobster, any kind of pasta and any kind of cheese. No entry fee for chefs, and discounts provided on cheese and lobster meat. After the judging for the Lobster Mac n Cheese Contest, the doors will open to the public for tastings from the 20 professional chefs competing. Tickets for the tastings are $10 each and are available at the Camden and Rockland offices of the Penobscot Bay Chamber of Commerce, State of Maine Cheese Company in Rockport, Grasshopper Shop in Rockland and Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta. Limited tickets will be sold so get ickets in advance, as they may or may not be available at the door.
