‘Seasons’ winners announced
Rockport — Maine Media Workshops + College has announced the winners of its latest multi-media competition, “Seasons.” Winners were selected from four categories: photography portfolio; single image photography; video; and writing.
“Seasons” received a total of 800 submissions in photography, video and writing from creative storytellers worldwide. Entrants span five countries, 29 states and the District of Columbia. More than $13,000 in prizes were awarded, including cash, workshop scholarships and Quadcopter and GoPro HERO3 prizes.
Of the 19 awards in Grand Prize and Honorable Mention categories, contestant Mary Woodman received two: Single Image Photography Grand Prize and Single Image Photography Honorable Mention. A former student of famed photographer Paul Caponigro of Cushing, Woodman describes her work as drawn to the rhythms of nature.
Photo Portfolio Grand Prize winner Eric Hamby described his winning collection of images as one that explores the struggle with finding personal balance among the many roles we face day-to-day. Balancing family life with his career in science, Hamby turns to fine art photography to examine the interstices between work and family.
While she brings a primarily writing-based background to her filmmaking collective The Sisters Grumbling, Writing Grand Prize winner Megan Grumbling said she is excited to further her newest endeavor with the awarded prize of a Maine Media Workshop. She will be taking her first filmmaking course with Maine Media Workshops later this year.
Video Grand Prize winner Erica Shires was named one of PDN’s 30 in 2006 and has since exhibited her work in New York and Europe as well as in many festivals worldwide. Her winning video “Last Days” is an homage to the garden at rest in winter, of endings and hope for the beginnings to come in the New Year.
The international competition had one Midcoast winner — Honorable Mention in Writing recipient Sandy Weisman, who operates artist retreat 26 Split Rock in South Thomaston. To see the complete list of winners, visit mainemedia.edu/contest/seasons-contest-results.
