Sailors will Capsize Boats in Pen Bay YMCA Pool for Safety!

By The Apprenticeshop | Mar 25, 2014

How often do you see 14-ft sailboats gliding around an indoor pool? Chances are not often. And how about seeing those boats capsizing and righting again? Well…Rockland Community Sailing will be putting two 420 sloops in their pool for a Capsize Safety Seminar on March 29 at the Penobscot Bay YMCA.

The goals of the seminar are to practice and perfect sailing tricks to improve capsize recovery skills. Sailors will learn to deal with capsize problems like untangling and uncleating lines and gear, getting back in the boat, good communication, and teamwork. Experienced sailors will also demonstrate and teach the “fast scoop method” which gets a boat up and sailing again quickly. Cold water safety, sailing gear and Spring High School Sailing plans will also be reviewed.

Sometimes small boat capsizing is fun, sometimes it’s frustrating. But when you practice capsize recovery you become a safer, more confident, and faster sailor. Most important, you’re better prepared for any capsizing adventures. This is especially valuable for RCS High School sailing team members who start practicing in April. Sailors racing small boats can routinely capsize as they push the limits while trying to win. With proper skills and practice a good sailors can right a boat and be sailing again in seconds.

“In the pool, we can practice techniques over and over in controlled conditions ‘til you get it right. Then if a sailor flips in the harbor, they’ll know what to do,” says KC Heyniger, Waterfront Programs Director. “It’s great to be able to use the Penobscot Bay YMCA’s pool to help local youth sailors learn and practice safe sailing skills despite the long cold winter.”

The event will be held Saturday, March 29, at the Penobscot Bay YMCA pool at 116 Union Street, Rockport, ME from 5:30-8:45pm. It is open to sailors with 420 experience from grades 7-12. Participants should bring bathing suits, a change of clothes, and a life jacket. PFDs will also be available. Prior registration is required. The cost is $10.  Spectators welcome! To sign up or for more information please call KC Heyniger at 207-594-1800 or email kch@apprenticeshop.org.  Rockland Community Sailing is a program at The Apprenticeshop, 643 Main Street, a school for boatbuilding and seamanship offering a variety of programs for youth and adults in sailing and boatbuilding.
