Sail, Power and Steam Museum expansion under way
Rockland — There is continuing excitement at the Sail Power & Steam Museum.
Even though it is officially closed for the winter, the work continues on expansion. Almost 1,500-square-feet of floor space, three rooms and a spectacular view will be added to the facility at 75 Mechanic St.
The largest room will be a classroom where maritime lectures and programs will be held. There will be a reading room for quiet study and a museum administration office. An adjunct to the big room will be three computer stations where the researcher will be able to research anything.
The library of sea faring fiction and non-fiction will be categorized and the technical material for the navigator will encourage detailed research from the scope of celestial navigation to coastal piloting and chart interpretation. The ambiance will be maritime — paintings, antique sextants, compasses, charts and lots of brass lamps.
In the new facility, the museum will be hosting sessions with a Coast Guard authorized instructor for those studying for their captain’s license. After a long winter’s work, the library will be up and running for the 2014 season at the Sail Power & Steam Museum.
