Sacred Harp singing March 24

Mar 18, 2013

Damariscotta — The fourth Sunday Damariscotta Area Sacred Harp singing will be held March 24 at the home of Corrone and Ruth Ann Bryant at 552 Main St./Business Route 1. The singing will go from 2 to 5 p.m. All (with or without Sacred Harp singing experience) are most welcome.

This is a free, participatory event, not a performance. The singing is primarily from the “The Sacred Harp,” a shape note tunebook that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fugue-ing tunes, anthems, and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England; popular in Maine up until the Civil War; and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day.

A potluck supper will follow the singing, so bring a dish to share. For more information, call 841-4923 or send email to singing@mainesacredharp.org.
