Sacred Harp singing Dec. 23

Dec 17, 2012

Damariscotta — The 4th Sunday Damariscotta Area Sacred Harp singing will be held Sunday, Dec. 23 from 2 to 5 p.m. at the home of Corrone and Ruth Ann Bryant at 552 Main St. All — with or without Sacred Harp singing experience — are most welcome. This is a free participatory event, not a performance.

The singing is primarily from “The Sacred Harp,” a shape note tunebook that has been in continuous publication with periodic revisions since 1844. The music consists of hymns, fugue-ing tunes, anthems and other songs in a style rooted in Colonial New England, popular in Maine up until the Civil War and in areas of the rural South and West up to the present day.

There will be a potluck supper following the singing, so participants are asked to bring a dish to share. For more information and directions, call the Bryants at 563-6083 or send email to singing@mainesacredharp.org. The home is across the street from Great Salt Bay School; park in the shell midden parking lot just to left of the house.
