Runquist looks back in annual show
Martinsville — Björn Runquist will have his annual Open Studio show Friday through Sunday, Aug. 9 through 11, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily at the Ocean View Grange on Route 131. There will be a reception Friday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Ocean View Grange is located a mile from the center of Port Clyde.
Runquist is primarily a landscape painter who occasionally returns to abstract work. His painting covers a wide range of subjects including the ordinary elements of everyday life, the familiar views on the coast of Maine and travels here and abroad. This year’s show will be a significant departure from the usual format in that it will be a retrospective of selected pieces from the past 30 years, as well as new work from this past year.
After 32 summers in Maine, Runquist has become a full-time Maine resident. As such, he said he feels it is time to show the wider range of his work. Having just retired from a career of teaching, he felt that the time was right to “throw a glance at where I have been artistically over the past years … I think it will be one of my most interesting shows in the 20 years that I have been doing the ‘open studio’ format at the Grange.” Runquist also will finish the summer season with a painting workshop, taught with his son, artist Tollef Runquist, Aug. 19 through 23 from his studio in St. George.
Björn Runquist is represented by Landing Gallery in Rockland, Gleason Fine art in Boothbay and in Portland and by Morrison Gallery in Kent, Conn., and Horton Hayes Fine Art in Charleston, S.C. His paintings are in numerous private and corporate collections, including the Farnsworth Art Museum, and he was highlighted in the “Canvas” section of Maine Home and Design. His work has been included in the State Department’s Art in Embassies program for the last nine years and can be seen both on the State Department’s website, art.state.gov/artists.aspx, and his own, bjornrunquist.com.
